The Holland Hurricanes concluded their 2020 awards celebration on Thursday evening after 22 days of presentations through their social media accounts.

After individual team presentations and a collection of major awards were handed out, the ‘Canes named their 2019-20 Coach of the Year, plus male and female Rookies and Athletes of the Year.

Marissa Macaulay, from women’s volleyball, was named the Female Athlete of the Year. 

Macaulay, from Truro, Nova Scotia, led the ‘Canes to their first ever Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) conference banner in 2020.  Individually she was named a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Canadian, the ACAA Player of the Year, a member of the ACAA’s first All-Conference team, as well as the Hurricanes women’s volleyball most valuable player.  Statistically she led the conference in assists, and assists per set, during the season.

Alex Lourenso, from men’s soccer, was named the Male Athlete of the Year.

Lourenso, from Stratford, PEI, led the ‘Canes to their sixth-straight conference banner in the fall.  He was named a CCAA All-Canadian, CCAA Academic All-Canadian, a member of the ACAA’s first All-Conference team plus the Hurricanes men’s soccer most valuable player.  Statistically he led the ACAA in goals, game winning goals, points, points per game, assists, assists per game, shots per game and total shots during the season. 

The 2020 Hurricanes Female Rookie of the Year was Emily Cormier, from women’s soccer. 

A dominant force in the ‘Canes ACAA championship in the fall, Cormier, from Charlottetown, PEI, was also named a CCAA Academic All-Canadian, ACAA Rookie of the Year, a member of the ACAA’s first All-Conference team and the Hurricanes women’s soccer top offensive player award winner.  Statistically she led the conference in goals, goals per game, points and points per game.

From Peakes, PEI, Tyson McInnis was named the 2020 Hurricanes Male Rookie of the Year from men’s baseball.

The national bronze medalist was also an all-star at the 2019 National Collegiate Baseball Championship (NCBC), an Atlantic Collegiate Baseball Association (ACBA) all-star and the Hurricanes men’s baseball most valuable player.

In his final season with the Hurricanes, Kris McKinnon was named the Hurricanes Coach of the Year.

From Stratford, PEI, Kris spent nine seasons with women’s soccer Hurricanes; his first two as an assistant and his final seven at the head coaching position. 

He finished his Hurricanes coaching career with a championship in 2019 to go along with his two others from 2013 and 2016.

His career coaching record with the ‘Canes finishes at 62-27-14 (ACAA regular season, playoffs and CCAA national championships).

Leadership in Sport Award; Calandra Bychyk (women’s soccer/volleyball), Paige Deighan (women’s soccer/hockey), Kalie MacKinnon (women’s soccer/volleyball) and Benjamin Nwaogazi-Awuja (men’s soccer/cross country running)

In recognition of students who contributed to the development and promotion of sport at Holland College and in our community.

Citizenship Award; Sam Gerbig (women’s volleyball) and Bobby Gama (men’s soccer)

In recognition of student-athletes who have demonstrated outstanding athletic ability, academic excellence and also demonstrates leadership and a commitment to the community.

Hurricanes Physiotherapy Award; Kristin Gosse (women’s basketball)

Presented to a Holland College student-athlete who exemplifies perseverance and overcomes adversity to return to play or continue to contribute to their team after injury or health challenge.

President’s Award; Nicole McInnis (women’s soccer) and Hannah Cousins (women’s hockey)

Recognizing students who were actively involved in promoting and building the varsity program at Holland College.
